Like “One Morning in Sunnydale” shortly before it, “Mom” was one of the first Buffyfics I ever encountered. There are very few actual events, most of the narrative being taken up with discussion and personal reflection. For all that, it remains one of the most internally dynamic stories on my favorites list, and one of the funniest as well, with an original and entertaining “voice” for the central character. Though the fundamental premise has been Jossed to extinction by now (not surprising, since a number of years have passed since the story’s events), one might wish that the eventual canon depiction of the narrator could have been anywhere near as interesting as A.J.’s approach.
I wouldn’t mind finding other work by this author, if the quality remains comparable. Some stories are timely … and some are still a fun read even when the season has long passed. This is one such.
