Some stories are told with a meticulous, almost photographic richness of detail … and some are told in glimpses of thought and imagery that flash the barest outlines of the story to the reader, leaving the sparked imagination to fill in the rest. Chapin’s “Alternative Lifestyle” is an excellent example of this latter approach, a surreal near-hallucinogenic stream of thought and sensation that nonetheless communicates an intriguing and altogether credible possible world. Nor is the author locked into a single style; “Bloodsucker” and “Sleeping Beauty”, while more conventionally narrated, approach their subject matter from completely different directions and fulfill their purpose with brisk economy of language. Though the latter two stories serve primarily as a contrast to “Lifestyle”, all three are worth inspection and respect.
