Some stories excel by originality of concept or approach, some by brilliant, vivid use of language, some by taking a theme and following it out with consummate thoroughness. “The Snow Queen” finds an entirely different way of succeeding. Every page brings new delights; there are constant sidelong references to canon events, in-jokes that depend on knowledge of the characters and their histories, and glimpses into how certain developments have affected the persons who lived through them.

The story itself is decent enough, solidly within the realm of genfic, but the real magic is in the telling. Characterization is accurate, the dialogue styles of those in the spotlight beautifully match their canon depictions, and it requires no effort whatsoever to see it all actually playing out on your television screen. Though referring to Buffy events (and peripherally featuring some of the players), this is primarily an Angel story. Every line shows affection and respect for the world created by Joss, and provides some of the best entertainment I’ve had in a long time.
