Stories written in response to Episode 100 (“the Gift”) tend to be overemotional or overstark. Exceptions include the Sunnydale Slayers’ “Darkest Dawn” series … and Esmerelda’s “A Dirty Job”, which could easily be a part of that particular collection. Brief, to the point, and more than a little depressing, it nonetheless provides a convincing portrait of “survivor’s guilt” as it pertains to one of the Slayer’s nearest and dearest. As with most such personality snapshots, it’s easier to read the work than describe it, so by all means read.
