Fact: I deeply dislike ‘slash’ fic (stories that pair male with male or female with female, whether in a sexual or merely romantic relationship). I don’t write such things, I don’t read them, and I don’t recommend them. So when I post “the Way, Way Back” on this list, it means that the storytelling is so superb that it simply overwhelms my distaste for the genre. Plotting is smooth, characterization is flawless, and it meets one of my own favorite criteria in that it could — at the time — still be slotted in with canon. This one leaves a lump in your throat, and bears up well under repeated readings.
