Julie Fortune

A relative rarity in fanfiction, “Julie Fortune” is the fanfic pseudonym of an actual professional writer who also turns out stories devoted to her favorite other-people-own-them characters. She writes in various fandoms, with only a few stories taking place in the world of Buffy. Several of these, however, are well worth attention.

Wolfbane” finds the Scooby Gang meeting an unexpected threat by way of various unconventional means, and the depiction of Oz — every bit as subtle and minimalist as Seth Green’s portrayal of the character — is authentic and unforgettable. “When She Was Bad” (not to be confused with the Season 2 episode of the same name) shows a situation reminiscent of Mediancat’s “Dancing With Myself” and A.C. Chapin’s “Alternative Lifestyle”, while offering a few distinctive twists of plot and characterization that make it stand well apart from both.

A story arc set in the Angel venue — “Slightly Darker Than Black” and “Burn” — offers an alternative to the third year season-ender of that series. Dark, a bit more explicit than my usual preferences, but in all essentials ringing true to the people as we know them, and in some ways more satisfying than actual canon events. If the actual Angel writers had done and aired these, no one would have questioned the dramatic or thematic value.

Finally, “the Dead Church” continues the Angel arc begun by the two preceding stories. Much more recent than its predecessors, this piece shows — if nothing else — that Fortune hasn’t lost her interest in the world of Buffy/Angel with the current demise of both series.

Read these, consider them, and express your appreciation to the author. They, and she, deserve it.
