An all-too-common theme in fanfiction is the small conceit that shows the subjects of fanfiction (in this context, Buffy et al) reacting to the stories themselves. In most cases it’s not done very well: mildly amusing on first exposure, but growing less tolerable as the experience repeats. Happily, the HonorH story “’Ships That Pass into Type” rises above such a standard. The story is quick, witty, and brief, and pokes fun at some of the clichés found only too frequently in Buffyfic. Not the deepest of subjects, it’s served as an appetizer rather than as an entree, and functions admirably in that capacity.
Nor is that the author’s only offering; there are several stories at an overall site, and I’ve not yet had time to go through them all, but one I read a while back and recently re-discovered, “Graduation Day”, adds some quite convincing details to the two-part finale of Season Three. Not many authors can do well at blending dialogue and events of their own creation into those of canon, but here it’s made to work. A third story, “That’s Life” offers some welcome and authentic filler-slash-characterization following the events of the Season 6 finale.
