“Bed of Bones”, a story of the First Slayer, is done with a minimalist economy that many professionals could emulate to their profit. What little I can say to recommend it doesn’t do it proper justice, so read it with respect. A second piece, “Girl 1”, is imbued with a quiet, stark horror that rings all too disturbingly true. (And a more recent piece, “Decent Interval”, is considerably lighter and even a little fun, without losing its sharp edge.) Kaveney has other stories, and not always to my taste, but they never lack for quality.
