Jane Leavell

Anyone who reads my own stories will quickly become aware that I’m a die-hard Joyce fan; when it comes to enjoying a character, though, Giles eases in a close second. Leavell has turned out several tales that focus on Giles, and do so with solid, balanced storytelling. “A Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body” is the shortest and least serious, but remains fun and entertaining (and there’s one interior pun that had me moaning in anguish when I finally got it). “Music, Magick, and Mayhem” features Giles and Ethan Rayne — another perennial favorite — and deals with both past and ‘present’; in addition, it does something I always enjoy seeing, which is to take a minor episode point and make it a significant feature of a story. Finally, “Gypped” (my favorite of the three I chose to profile here) extrapolates a current storyline from canon history, in an interesting and convincing manner. Any reader (or writer) could do worse than these.
