I have a soft spot for interpolative fiction, those stories that attempt to fill in the gaps between canon events; I’ve essayed a few myself, and when I find someone else trying the same thing, I tend to pay attention. Sarah T. has produced a number of Buffy/Angel stories, and several fit the description above. “Serves in a Whirlwind”, set between Seasons 2 and 3, is primarily personality exploration, though interwoven with enough activity to keep it interesting. “Anywhere But Here”, taking place shortly after the end of Season 5, is one of the better “Gift”-response fics I’ve seen. Both maintain the respect for canon characterization that are mandatory for meeting my personal preferences, and both offer insight into the nature of duty/responsibility and the costs of failing to meet it. These are very capable stories. I’ll be reading more of this author as I encounter further of her works.
