Sharkbait

My first thought in beginning my own fanfiction was to show some of the lesser characters, whom I felt hadn’t gotten as much exposure as they merited. Somehow, in my mind, getting a better look at the not-so-well-known areas of the larger Buffyworld served in fact to further validate that world. I’ve never lost the taste for it, and continue to be intrigued and pleased by works that follow the same path.

One of the most effective is Sharkabait’s “Mascara”. I had already enjoyed this brief, bitter, and thoroughly convincing voyage into the psyche of the most oft-appearing non-mainline character in Buffydom, one whose provenance goes clear back to the original unaired episode pilot; when it took an Honorable Mention in the “Best Characterization – Buffy” category of the Fall/Winter 2002 Halo Awards, my only disagreement was that I felt it to be more deserving than the putative winner. This story anticipated in many ways the central character’s eventual actions and choices, and remains an entirely plausible depiction of a flawed “normal” person finding himself in a world of heroes.

Regrettably, I have been unable to find any other Buffy tales by this author. If they existed, I have no doubt I’d read and enjoy them.
