Rheanna

I have only one problem with Rheanna: all her stories so far have been set firmly in the world of Angel. My primary allegiance is to Buffy, and I’ll recognize and recommend Angel fic now and then, but I’m not comfortable with it.

When dealing with an author of this quality, however, such stickling for detail quickly becomes too expensive. Rheanna has turned out no less than four stories deserving of top honors. “In the Waiting” is original, insightful, disturbing, and true to character. “Blood and Water” is more action-oriented and perhaps more conventional, but pales only in comparison to Rheanna’s other work. “Splinter”, co-authored with Yahtzee, manages to depict rolling chaos in a way that eventually makes sense (plus, it gives an authentic depiction of Fred, which couldn’t have been easy considering that Joss himself was at that point still rounding out the character); and “For One Night Only” is rollicking good fun, while at the same time being thoroughly convincing on the levels of action, personal relationships, and solid plotting.

All of the stories have that actually-watching-an-episode feel to them. All of them have the principal characters speaking with the voices we’re accustomed to hearing. All of the stories are more than worth the time it takes to read them, or to send praise to the author.

Now, if only she’d relent and write something about Buffy …
